Peony and foliage bouquet line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing of a small bouquet with two large peonies, sprigs of lavender-like buds and several leafy stems tied together at the base. The linework is fine and even, with hatching and dotted detail in the petals and leaves, and the design is shown without any colour fill. It sits centrally on a plain white background, with a red card with floral illustrations partly visible in the lower right corner.

Dear Ruth,

The peonies arrived at ten to four, still tight in their paper, and Mr Okafor from the flower stall at the top of Coldharbour Lane had sent a note saying they would open by noon if we kept them out of the draught. I didn't tell him I had the bread proving on every shelf and no room for buckets. I put them on the cold step by the back door instead, between the crates of milk and your old bicycle, and went back to scoring loaves.
Dawn came up grey over the bins while the tins cooled. By the time the first van pulled in for the Harrow Road order, the blooms had split a little at the edges, rose-pink under the lamp, and the whole shop smelled of yeast and something green and sharp. Mrs Dhillon bought a cob and asked if they were for a wedding. I said they were for nobody in particular, which was true, and which she didn't believe.
The bouquet itself is the thing I keep thinking about. You know the drawing I sent you last spring, the one with the two big heads and the lavender sprigs tied at the stems with string. I finally wrote the order out properly and tied them the way I'd tried to draw them, loose at the top, gathered tight below, with the leaves fanning out like they were reaching for the window.
I'm sending you a photograph of it on the counter. Come up at Easter. The ovens will be warm and I'll save you the heel of the rye.
Love, Dee
