Magnolia sleeve on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A sleeve of magnolia blossoms, buds and leaves runs down the upper arm on a vine, with the largest open flower near the middle of the arm. The work uses soft grey shading and fine dark linework to give the petals depth and form. The plain white top and a colourful painted mural in the background sit around the arm, and the person's face is not shown.

Mind the step, Tom, the frost has got into the cobbles and they're like glass under there. Leave the lamp on the wall. Hannah never let anyone touch that tree in winter, and I'm not about to start now.

The magnolia stood by the north gate, the one her husband had carried home from a Cornish nursery in a crate that still smelled of tar. For forty winters it was nothing but grey wood and furred buds shut tight as fists. The men who mended the gates called it a fence post with ideas. Hannah only fetched her shawl and said nothing, because she had seen the thing in the dark and knew better.
The year the ewes started lambing in January, the sleet came sideways for a fortnight. On the ninth night a lamb was stuck in the lower field, and Hannah went out with a bucket of warm water and the lantern swinging from her wrist. She was at the gate when she heard a creak, like a door opening in another room, and then the soft sound of petals unfolding in the snow. One bloom, then another, creamy and far too large for the bare wood, pale as milk in the lamplight.
She didn't stop to look. She got the lamb out, carried it to the barn, and was back before the bucket had cooled. By morning the whole tree was open, a white sleeve climbing every branch, with frost lying on the petals and not melting. When her husband asked how it had happened, she only said it doesn't bloom for the weather. Some mornings she still goes out to touch the cold petals, and they stay open under her hand.
