Magnolia tattoo on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a large open flower, likely a magnolia, with three leaves spreading out below it. The petals and leaves are built from fine dark hatching lines that create shading along their edges and folds. The design sits centrally on the upper back against plain skin, with no other elements in the frame.

Nell had been told the magnolia would not flower before May, so when the first bloom split open above the lych-gate on the morning of the wedding, she took it as a bad omen and said so to nobody. Her aunt Ruth was already in the vestry arguing with a florist about ribbon. Nell stood under the tree with her gloves in one hand, watching a petal the size of a child's cupped palms turn slowly in the wind.

Her grandfather had engraved botanical plates for a Leeds nursery for forty years, and he had taught her to see a flower as a set of shadows rather than a colour. Every fold, he said, was a question of how close you could lay one line beside another before the paper gave up. He had drawn this very tree the summer before he died, in brown ink, and the sketch was tucked into the front of the family Bible on the vestry table where the register would be signed.
After the vows, while the guests drifted toward the marquee, Nell slipped the sketch from the book and held it against the bloom. The engraving and the real thing did not match. In his drawing the petals curled inward like hands closing. The living tree had opened wider than he ever had, its edges pale and loose, and only the underside of each petal kept the dark hatching he had given it.
She folded the paper into her pocket, pulled off her other glove, and pressed her thumb to the cool shadow beneath the nearest petal, where the light could not reach.
