Magpie in flight pencil drawing
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A magpie is shown in mid-flight, with one wing raised high and the tail feathers fanned out and trailing. The bird is drawn in graphite pencil with fine hatched strokes that define the feathers, the glossy dark areas and the white patches on the wings and chest. The plain pale background leaves the bird as the only focus of the composition.

Dear Frankie,

I found the old tin of school badges in the back of Mum's wardrobe on Sunday, the one with the bent lid, and your name was still on the back of the blue one from Year Nine. I nearly posted it to you without a note, then thought better of it, because you would have wanted the story that goes with it. You always did.
The reunion is in the Crown at Halesworth, the function room with the carpet that sticks to your shoes. Mr Pargeter has promised a slideshow, which means forty photographs of the 1998 netball team, and Denise Ashby has already rung me twice to ask whether you were coming. I said I hadn't heard. That is the truth, and I'd like you to know I didn't say it to be cruel.
The magpie that followed us home from the bus stop that winter, do you remember? Two for joy, you kept saying, and you counted them out on the wall like a bet. I still think about the way it dropped off the hawthorn and went straight up past the bins, tail spread like a fan someone had shut and opened again just to show off. You said it was going somewhere better. I said it was going to the chip shop.
Come on Saturday. Bring the badge. If nobody knows you, I will introduce you as the girl who taught me to count to ten in birds.
Love, Jess
