Maleficent and raven on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the Disney character Maleficent in profile with a black raven beside her, framed by a dark, swirling thorned border. The linework is bold and dark, with solid black areas on the raven and the character's clothing. Turquoise and blue washes sit behind the figures, and small pink and purple accents appear around the frame, set against pale skin and a wooden floor.

The raven had perched on the lychgate for three days before Edith Marrow thought to ask whose it was. Nobody in Thornbury Cross kept birds that size, and nobody kept one that stared at the vicar's wife the way this one did, head cocked, one eye like a wet pebble. Mrs Haddow said it was a messenger. Mr Pell said it was a crow with ideas above its station. Edith, who polished the church brass on Tuesdays and had no time for either theory, simply swept around its feet.

On the fourth morning the bird was gone and in its place stood a woman in a high black collar, leaning on the gate as though she had owned it for years. Her cheekbones were sharp enough to cut bread. She asked for the key to the old chapel, the one bricked up since the flood, and when Edith said the key was lost, the woman smiled and said that was the trouble with keys: they went wherever the lock wanted them.
They walked the thorn hedge together. Briars had grown over the chapel door in a dense, deliberate swirl, and where the woman touched them they curled back like a sleeper turning over. Behind the stone, a bell hung on a rope of rust and cobweb. The raven flew down and rang it once, a flat, rolling note that reached every cottage on the hill.
Nobody in the village slept that night. By morning the hedge had rooted itself around the lychgate, and Edith found a single black feather tucked into her polish tin, with a note in a hand she did not know: Keep the bell, and the bird will keep you company. She kept the bell. The raven never came back, but the hedge did, and so did the rain, thick and blue as watercolour, for a week.
