Woman with blue hair and three cats on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman's face with a stern expression and green eyes sits at the centre, framed by stylised blue hair that rises into a tall bun. Three grey cats with yellow eyes and pink ears peer out from the hair, and a yellow and orange spiked collar sits at the base of the design. Bold black outlines and smooth colour fills dominate, with the blue hair shaded in darker tones for depth.

The cats were already up on the dodgems' roof when Mrs Dorothea Lusk came storming across the showground at Hatherleigh, her hair piled so high in its blue bun that the ring-toss man had to duck under it. "Three," she said, not stopping. "Three, Tobias. Count them." I counted. Grey, grey, grey, each with yellow eyes that looked at me as if I owed them money.

I had been her dogsbody since Easter, sweeping the caravan steps and fetching tea from the urn by the generator. Nobody else would take the job. The fair moved every week between the same six towns, and the cats travelled with us in a wicker hamper that rattled on the back of the lorry. Mrs Lusk never explained where they came from. She only said they had been her mother's, and that a fair woman with hair like hers had to keep something watching the crowds.
That Saturday the wind got under the big top and the canvas bellied like a sail. The cats came off the roof one by one, not falling but drifting, the way leaves do. Mrs Lusk stood in the mud with her hands on her hips and did not chase them. "They'll come back when the lamps are lit," she said. "They always do."
They did. At dusk I looked up from the tea urn and saw three yellow-eyed shapes settle on her shoulders and in her hair as she walked out between the lit stalls, her spiked collar catching the light like a row of small flames. She did not look back at me. She did not need to. The ring-toss man ducked, and everyone else just watched the cats.
