Blue ink mandala sketch on paper
Geometric · Colour · Flash
Two mandala designs are drawn in blue and turquoise fineliner on a sheet of white paper. The darker blue mandala sits in the upper left and is built from layered petals, dots and lace-like scalloped rings, while the lighter turquoise mandala overlaps it toward the lower right with a scalloped outer edge. The drawing is photographed from above on a bed of pebbles, with a pen and spiral sketchbook at the top of the frame.

The rain had come up the river before the stalls were open, and Mabel Trusk stood under her awning with a bundle of thread she had not yet paid for. Her mother had dyed it in the indigo vat behind the fulling mill, and the blue had not come out even. It was darker at the middle and paler at the ends, the way a pond goes at dusk.

Her daughter Ada took it from her without speaking and laid it on the wet trestle. Ada was nine and had been counting stitches since she could hold a bobbin. She pinned the thread to a board and began to work a ring, then another inside it, petal after petal, until the market women leaned out from their own stalls to see what the child was making in the rain.
Nobody in Lower Cadwell could say who had first taught the girl the pattern. Some said it was her grandmother's, and some said it came up out of the river. When the bride from the farm came down the lane for the cloth, the lace was finished, and it was thrown over the stall like a net. The rain beaded on it without soaking through.
The bride paid in coins still warm from her pocket. Afterwards Mabel found a second, paler ring of stitches worked beneath the first, scalloped at the edge, where Ada had gone on working in the dark while her mother slept. She held it up to the lamp, and the rain ran off the awning and down into the gutter, blue as the vat.
