Mandala and dagger tattoos on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with silver-grey hair rests a finger against her lips, showing black and grey tattoos on her forearm. The forearm carries mandala designs, one with an om symbol, and a dagger set within a fine-lined web pattern, with shading and dotted detail. A small tattoo sits on the back of the hand, and the warm, softly lit indoor setting keeps the focus on the ink.

The compass had stopped again at a quarter past four, which Mara logged as the first honest thing the day had done. Eleven rings of wire ran out from the hub of the observatory roof, each bent to the angles Dr Okonedo measured in March, and between them the spokes had been drawn so fine that dew hung on them like beads on a rosary. Nobody had told the spider where the survey ended. It had simply kept going.

At the centre, pinned through the hub with a copper tack, hung her father's surgeon's dagger. The parish clerk wanted it down before the Whitsun fair, said it looked like a funeral in a church window. Mara had told him the web had built itself around the blade, and he had written something in his book and gone away. She did not blame him. She had sat up three nights trying to find the logic in it herself.

The petals of each ring she had counted in threes, because her father always said three was the number of things a person could trust: the bearing, the chain, the ink. She had drawn the om at the outermost ring so the sound would have somewhere to go when the wind came off the moor. Wherever she traced a line from the dagger outward, it met a thread, and every thread met another, and none of them broke when she leaned her weight on them.

At dawn she climbed the ladder with the log under her arm and touched the blade with one fingertip. The web shivered from the centre out, ring by ring, until the whole survey hummed like a struck bell. She wrote the reading down exactly as it came: dagger, true north, web intact. Under it, in a smaller hand, she added that nothing had been cut, and nothing had needed to be.
