Rose and lotus mandala on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A mirror selfie of a seated person in a cropped grey sweatshirt and denim shorts, with the head out of frame. A black linework rose with leaves sits on the upper thigh, and a brown lotus mandala with a crescent moon sits on the outer thigh below it. Another tattoo is partly visible on the other thigh, and the carpeted room and bed are in the background.

Dear Nell, The last up train went through at twenty to eleven tonight with nobody aboard but a guard and a crate of seed potatoes, and I stood on the down platform afterwards with the lamp and watched its tail-light shrink to nothing. Mr Pryce has promised me the signal box once the new lever frame is fitted, which means I will be up there after dark with nothing to do but count wagons and keep the kettle warm.

I have kept the rose you pressed in my Bradshaw. It has gone the colour of weak tea, and its petals stick to the page for the Ledbury line. You asked whether the lotus on the pond behind the goods yard had opened yet. It has. Ten days ago Dilys from the refreshment room found three of them in the water beside the siding, pale as the inside of a shell, and she made us all come out to look before the kettle boiled.
Here is what I have not told anyone. Last Thursday I stood in the box with the lamp unlit and the moon came up over the water tower, a thin paring of it, and for a minute the whole yard looked like the drawing you once made for me on the back of a ticket: rings inside rings, every spoke pointing at the same small light. I thought, that is what a station is for. Every line routed back to one point so that nobody runs into anybody else.
Come on Saturday. Bring the book. I will pull the points and we can walk the length of the platform to see whether the roses on the embankment have come through the fence. Yours, Ada.
