Gold and black geometric hand tattoos
Geometric · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand with dark glossy nails and stacked gold rings is shown against a pale backdrop. The tattoos use fine black linework with arrow and triangle motifs, alongside gold metallic details that appear to be a separate ink or foil layer, running from the back of the hand onto the middle finger. The mix of gold and black, with the sharp angles of the design, gives a crisp, graphic composition.

Mrs Okonedo wanted the arrow to point at the sea. Ruth told her the sea was behind the bakery, which meant the arrow would point at the chapel instead. They argued over three cups of tea while the size dried on the board.

Ruth had learned gilding from her uncle, who said gold did not care what it sat on, only how steady the hand was. Triangles were the hardest. You laid the size, waited until it turned tacky enough to hold but not so tacky it dragged, then pressed the leaf down with a brush worn soft at the tip. Mrs Okonedo's board had a black line running from the door to the corner, a narrow arrow every few yards, each one with a small gold triangle tucked beside it like a flag on a mast.
By four the wind had come round off the water and the leaf kept lifting at the edges. Ruth pinned her sleeve back, breathed on the brass, and laid the last triangle without touching it twice. Mrs Okonedo came out with a cloth to wipe the dust, stopped, and said nothing for a long moment.
"It points at the chapel," Ruth said. "I know," said Mrs Okonedo. "That's where my husband is buried. I walk down this way every Sunday so I don't have to look for the path." She folded the cloth in quarters and set it on the step. "Leave it as it is. The sea's always there. It's the chapel people forget the way to."
