Thistle and Celtic knot design sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a thistle bloom on a long stem, flanked by spiky leaves that curve outward in a symmetrical layout. The stem braids into a Celtic-style interlace beneath the flower, with spiral scrolls and sweeping lines at the base. Shading is light and soft pencil on white paper, with the linework kept fine and even throughout.

Dear Ruthie, the ferry was cancelled again, so I am writing this on the back of the parish bulletin while I wait on the quay at Oban with a flask of your mother's tea going cold beside me. Mr Galbraith from the post office says the wind will drop by Thursday, but he said the same last Thursday, and the Thursday before that. Tell Dad the ewes are to be moved off the top field before the tups go in, and that Jamie Lennox has agreed to help with the gate if we pay him in eggs and not in whisky, which he will not believe we can manage.

I found the old brass pin you lost in the bottom of my bag, the one shaped like a thistle with the wee braided stem. The clasp is bent. I have straightened it as best I could with the pliers from the wash house, though I fear it will not sit flat again. I thought you might want it back before you leave for Glasgow, so I am keeping it in my coat pocket where I can feel the points every time I reach for my ticket.
The harbour master's wife says the knot work on the church railings was done by a man from Inveraray who could not finish a sentence without drawing a loop in the air with his finger. I asked him once where the pattern came from. He said a knot is only a line that has decided not to end, and then he laughed at himself and went back to his tea. I have been thinking about that all morning, watching the spirals of rope on the bollards and the gulls turning in their slow braids over the water.
The boat is in sight now, so I must stop. Write to me care of the post office, and do not let them talk you out of the Glasgow job if it is the one you want. The thistle will keep its shape in the drawer. Your loving sister, Morag.
