Mandala and moth on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala of layered petals and radiating lines surrounds a moth with spread wings, placed over a pale circle at the centre. The shading is built from fine dots and hatched linework, with a few small red accents on the moth and short dangling lines hanging below the design. The tattoo fills most of the frame against plain skin, with black shorts at the top and another dark tattoo partly visible on the adjacent leg.

You have pegged the string into the lawn for the third time this week, because the circle keeps wandering when you are not looking. Your father laid this bed out with a compass and a length of garden twine, eight rings of petals scratched into the soil, and he never let you plant anything in the middle until he was sure of the centre. Tonight the centre is still bare. The pale gravel you raked into it catches the porch light like a dropped coin.

The moths arrive before the dark is properly down. You stand at the edge with the watering can and count them, the big hawk moths with their furred bodies and the eyes on their wings that make the neighbour's cat hiss at the fence. One comes down onto the gravel and folds itself flat, wings spread like the lid of a box, and it does not move when you lean in. Your father would have said it was choosing its spot. He always said a garden was a machine for drawing things toward the light.
You fetch the hand trowel and the seed packet of moonflowers you have been saving since August, pale as the gravel and open only after sunset. You kneel and sink the first seed into the centre, just beside the moth, and you tell it aloud, which you have never done in front of anyone, that it can stay as long as it likes. The gate behind you swings open on its hinge. The string hums faintly in the wind, a thin silver line running back to the house.
By morning the moth is gone and the seed has split its skin. In the middle of the circle a single pale flower is already unfolding, its edges still wet with the night, and the petals around it have begun to open in order, one ring at a time, exactly as your father drew them.
