Geometric mandala with spike on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical ornamental motif with a layered, lotus-like central bloom and pointed outer petals, topped by a spike and ending in a long vertical dagger-like line with curled flourishes at its base. The shading is built from stippled dots and fine linework, giving a textured, graded look. The image has two panels: a wider view of the arm with a hand visible at the left, and a close crop of the tattoo against a plain background.

Dear Ruth,

The bus left me at the junction outside Coyote Wells at half past four, and I have been walking the old road since with the sun on my back and your father's brass compass knocking against my wrist. You will laugh, but the flower painted on the signpost there is the same shape as the one he scratched into the lid of his tool box. Eight petals, then another eight, then the spike like a pin holding the whole thing down against the wind.

The man at the petrol station said the road runs straight to the reservoir if you don't mind the dust. I don't mind dust. I have been counting telegraph poles instead, sixty-one of them before the first lorry came past, its driver lifting two fingers off the wheel the way the farmers did at home. He had a long radio aerial bouncing on his bonnet like a fishing rod, and he did not stop, which I took as a kindness.

By the third hour the heat had got into everything, the cracked earth, the thorn scrub, the little grey lizards that keep stopping to look at me as if I owe them rent. I sat on a boulder and drew the flower in the sand with a stick, the way Dad taught us to lay out a wheel, starting at the centre and working outwards. When I reached the long point at the bottom I could not lift the stick. It seemed to want to keep going, down into the ground, all the way to wherever the water is.

I am writing this at the reservoir, which is not a reservoir at all but a dry bowl with one green door on the far side. Someone has painted the same flower on it in white. I have decided that is a sign, so I am going to knock. Keep the kettle warm. I will send word when I know whether the road ends here or only turns.

Love, Maddie
