Peony tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large open peony sits across the forearm, with three pointed leaves rising above the bloom and a leaf cluster at its lower edge. The petals are outlined in solid black and shaded with dense stippled dots that build up soft tonal depth. The image is in black and grey, framed against a plain light wall, with a dark sleeve and studded belt visible at the left edge.

The bulb had survived six months in damp sawdust, which Harriet Coyle considered a small miracle and the ship's surgeon considered an insult to his Wardian case. It was wrapped in oilcloth in the lower hold, and every morning she went down with a candle and a dish of water to check whether the pale shoot had lengthened or rotted.

On the fortieth day out of Macau the shoot had not rotted. It had thickened, and at its tip sat a knot of crimson the size of a fist, folded tight as a letter nobody wanted to open. Harriet sat on an upturned crate and watched it for an hour, her pencil moving across the margin of her logbook. She drew the outer bracts first, then the leaves, three pointed blades rising like the prow of a small boat, then the swell of the bud itself, one dot of graphite at a time.
The captain thought the hold a poor place for a flower. He said so at dinner, between mouthfuls of salt beef, and Harriet said nothing until the pudding came. Then she told him that peonies in the Emperor's gardens had once been worth more than silver, and that a bloom opened only for those patient enough to wait. He laughed, but that night he sent a boy down with a bucket of seawater and a clean rag.
They reached the Thames in October with the bud still closed. Harriet carried the pot up the gangway herself, and when the nursery man at Chelsea finally lifted the cloth and asked what on earth it was, she showed him the drawing first.
