Mandala and rose tattoos on two forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two people hold hands, showing a black and grey dotwork mandala with a lotus centre and fine line detail on one forearm. On the other arm, a neo-traditional style pink rose with dark shading sits beside an illustrated woman's face. The photo is taken outdoors on paving, with rings visible and a lace-patterned dress sleeve in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The reunion was held in the village hall at Thorncombe, under the same water-stained ceiling where the class of 1987 had once performed nativity plays. Nell Harrow arrived late, carrying a pot of lotus bulbs wrapped in wet newspaper, and nobody asked why. Her old schoolfriend Tamsin had kept the story alive for thirty years, and she told it again over lukewarm squash, plainly, the way their grandmothers had told it.

There was once a pond behind the mill where the water stood so still that the sky lay on it like a plate. In summer a lotus opened there, white at the edges and dark at the heart, and the children were forbidden to touch it. A girl called Ida Vane, whose mother had gone to the coast and never come back, cut a single bloom at dusk and carried it home in her palm. Every petal she passed through her fingers left a small dark dot on her skin, and by the time she reached the door she had a ring of them around her wrist, fine as pin pricks.
The rose came later, the tale says, because the miller's daughter wanted what Ida had and hated her for it. She asked the wheelwright to paint a red rose over her own pulse, bright as the cider in the hall jug, and in the heat it ran until it was nothing but a bruise. Tamsin stopped there and looked toward the door. Nell pressed a bulb into the damp soil of the pot and said the flower never minded who cut it, only who kept it in water. Then she went to fetch more squash.
