Eye and triangle tattoos on fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand with dark nail polish rests against a black and white geometric patterned fabric. Two small black tattoos sit on the fingers: an open eye with radiating lines on the middle finger and a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line on the ring finger. The linework is solid and even, with flat black fill, and the background shows a colourful tattoo on the forearm at the left edge.

The rain at Saltergate market had been coming sideways since eight, and by eleven Tobias Quill had given up on the awning and let it drip onto the cardboard box of brass buttons. He sold clocks, mostly, and a few things that had once been clocks. Nobody came out in weather like this unless they had to.

At twenty past eleven a young woman in a yellow mac set a pocket watch on his trestle. The case was dented into a rough triangle around a worn circle, and inside the lid someone had scratched an open eye with rays spreading out like the spokes of a cartwheel. "It doesn't tick," she said. "It only moves when someone's looking at it."
Tobias had heard stranger things from men who came in for scrap. He opened the back. The hands sat still at a quarter to something, and the minute hand carried a fine vertical line through its centre, as though someone had meant to split the hour in two. He offered her four pounds. She offered him a ticket for the Tuesday ferry instead, which he did not understand, and then she was gone into the crowd of umbrellas.
That evening he wound the watch to test it. It ran. In the damp corner of the stall the eye in the lid stayed open, and each time he glanced at it the rain outside seemed to fall a little slower, as if the whole market were waiting to be counted. He put the watch in the drawer with the others and did not look at it again, though he heard it ticking all night.
