A rose with shaded petals and dark leaves extends from the forearm onto the back of the hand. The centre of the hand carries a symmetrical geometric mandala built from fine lines and dotted detail. The work is shaded in black and grey against a red brick wall, and the fingers have dark nail polish.

The rain had come sideways off the river since six, and by nine the only dry things on Crane Street were the tarpaulins and my father's lace. He had sold lace under this iron awning for forty years, and he still counted the bobbins every night as though one might walk off in the wet. I was counting them too when Mrs Oddie came hurrying up the pavement with a parcel held under her coat.

She wanted a runner for her parlour table, something to match the rose worked on her late husband's snuff box. I unwrapped the cloth on the trestle and showed her a pattern I had drawn in pencil the winter before: a rose the size of a saucer, its petals shaded with cross-hatching like pewter. Beneath it I had sketched a star built from twelve interlocking rings, each one pricked by hand so the lamplight would come through.
"It's too busy," she said, tapping the star. "Can you take the middle out?" I told her the middle was the point. Without it the rose had nothing to lean on, the way a cut bloom needs a stem. She frowned at me the way my father used to frown at men who haggled, then laughed and asked for brown paper so the rain wouldn't spot the ink.
When she had gone I sat with the drawing a long while. The rain kept drumming on the awning, and I thought how the star would look in morning light on her table, each point trembling as a cup was set down beside it. I packed the bobbins into their box, locked the trestle, and left the rose pinned to the board, face up, so whoever passed through the market next could see it wet and shining under the lamps.
