Mandala and swirl tattoo on the side of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close side view of a neck tattoo behind the ear, showing a floral mandala motif at the top and a lower mandala with fanned petals, joined by a long sweeping line of swirls and scrolls. The work uses dense dotwork and fine black linework, with grey shading in the petals and some softer tonal areas. The design follows the curve of the neck and sits against a dark-haired background, with a decorative plug visible in the ear.

Dear Nell,

The lace came back from Mrs Ashdown's on Tuesday, the good ivory shawl with the fan border, and it had been torn clean through the middle where somebody had danced in it without thinking. I spent three evenings on it under the lamp with the fine steel hook, pulling loose threads back into the pattern one dot at a time. You would have hated the patience. I did not mind it. There is a calm in counting out the small knots, the way you count the beats of a waltz when your feet have forgotten them.

Mrs Ashdown was cross when she came to collect it, but she stood by the window and turned it in the light, and then she laughed and said the petals looked like they were opening for the first time. She asked whether I had kept the old pattern book. I had not, so I drew the swirl from memory on the back of a gas bill: a long curling stem that starts high and runs down in scrolls to a half-round of petals at the bottom, like a vine that knows exactly where it wants to end up.

Dance night at the Palais on Saturday, and the band from Derby is back. Mr Gale says there will be a prize for the best-dressed couple, and I told him he could have the Ashdown shawl for one waltz if he behaves himself. Come home for it. Bring the blue dress. I will pin your hair up myself and we will see who can stop the other from laughing first.

Yours in thread and stubbornness, Ada
