Paisley scroll tattoo behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the side of a person's head with a tattoo behind the ear, on the neck. The design is a curling paisley-style scroll with fine lines, small dots along its inner edge and a tapering tail. The ink is dark and appears in black or grey tones against the skin, and the tattoo fills the frame's centre-right area with hair and an ear stud visible around it.

Dear Tom,

The shawl came back from Mrs Pellow's this morning, folded in tissue the way you like it, and I have spent most of the afternoon deciding whether to tell you that she has ruined the tail of the paisley. She went over the seed-pearl dots along the inner curl with a needle and no patience, so the scroll now looks like it is trying to slip off the border. Mam would have had plenty to say about that. Mam would have had plenty to say about most things this week.

The night shift went down at ten, and the lamps were still bobbing up the lane when the rain started. I walked as far as the head gate with your letter in my apron pocket and read it twice under the chapel wall, where the slate runs off in a sheet and nobody can see you through the gap. You write that the ship is sound and the sea has been kind. I believe you. You were never a liar, only a boy who thought a good story was worth a bit of trouble.

I have pressed a fern from the bank above the ponies and put it between the pages of the almanac. Keep it flat when you open it. Mrs Pellow says the damp gets into everything in Cardiff, and I will not have the fern come home looking like a wet biscuit.

Yours, Nell
