Mandala design on a shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A radial mandala of petals, dots and loops sits on the upper shoulder, shown from behind with the neck and hair visible. The fine, even dark brown linework has a henna-like look, with small dots at the outer points and a central circle. The warm skin tone and soft indoor light make the design stand out clearly against the shoulder.

Auntie Ruxandra mixed her paste in a tin saucer at the back of the dance hall, where the fiddlers could not see her and the floor could not scuff her work. Every winter she drew the same flower for whoever asked, a ring of petals opening from a single dot, with little beads of ink at every point so the eye would know where the pattern ended. People said her hand was steady because she had been married to a clockmaker and had learned to hold still.

The rule was simple and the old women repeated it like a psalm. Keep the flower dry for one night, do not dance with water on it, and it would carry you through to the last reel of the year. Nobody asked what happened to those who danced with water on them, because everybody already knew it was only the chill from the river.
Dragomir came in late, smelling of diesel, and asked for the flower on a sheet of paper rather than on his skin. He wanted it for Lidia, who had gone to the coast with her mother and not sent word. Ruxandra drew it slowly, counting petals aloud in Romanian, and when she folded the paper and handed it over she said only, Hold it dry.
Lidia came back on the first frost and walked into the hall with her hair wet from the rain. She found the paper in Dragomir's coat pocket, where he had kept it for six weeks. The ink had run in the damp and the beads had gone to smudges, but the ring at the centre still stood as sharp as a coin. They danced the last reel with the paper folded small between them, and it stayed dry.
