Rose branch tattoo on the upper chest

Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A thin stem curves upward with a rose bloom near the lower half and several serrated leaves spreading to either side. The linework is fine, with soft grey shading on the petals and leaves, and a larger patterned mandala design sits beneath the rose, partly covered by a light brown top. The image is entirely black and grey and is framed closely on the chest and collarbone area.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The guard wanted to know what was in the basket, and Marta told him it was bread, which was a lie only in the sense that everything in a village is bread if you are hungry enough. Under the cloth lay a rose cutting wrapped in wet moss, its stem no longer than a pencil, three leaves still green and one bud closed tight as a fist.

The rose came from the garden below the chapel at Vrana, where the old abbess had grown it against a wall facing the river. The border ran down the middle of that river, and since the spring the soldiers on the far bank had been burning anything that grew on the wrong side. Her grandfather had planted the first cutting before the line was drawn. He said roses did not read maps.

The guard unwrapped the moss, turned the stem in his fingers, and asked what kind of rose it was. Marta said it had no name left, only a habit: it climbed toward whatever light it was given. He looked at the bud for a long time. Then he took a pen from his breast pocket and wrote a number on the back of her papers, the way officials mark a parcel they have decided not to open.

On the far side she planted it in a tin by the window of a rented room, and it sulked for a month. Then one morning a single leaf had unfolded into a pattern like the stone rosette above the chapel door, its veins fanning out in neat rings. She watered it, and it kept on, stubborn as her grandfather, reaching for the glass.
