Mandala ankle tattoo with hanging drops

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A foot and ankle rest on pink and patterned fabric, with an ornamental mandala-style design on the ankle. The design is drawn in dark, fine lines with a symmetrical centre and chains of small dangling drops below. The ink is a single dark tone against warm skin, and the photo is framed with a plain border.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The marigolds were already strung across the terrace when Mrs Sandhu pulled a low stool into the shade and told you to stop fidgeting. Her niece, Harpreet, was getting married at dusk, and the cousins had decided that every woman in the family would leave the reception with something drawn on her skin. Your turn came last, after the cake had been cut and the drums had started up again on the lawn.

The artist worked from a notebook of old sketches, most of them soft at the corners. She chose a mandala with a heart at its centre, petals opening outward like the face of a clock, and beneath it a chain of small drops that she drew one at a time, each hanging from the last. "Keep still," she said, not unkindly, and the cool paste went on in steady lines. Nobody mentioned that the lines would fade. Everybody knew.

Afterwards the lamps swung in the breeze and the band played something slow. Harpreet's grandmother watched you from her chair and said a design that fine would last a week if you slept on your back. You laughed and promised, then spent the evening sitting very carefully, while the paste dried on the cloth around you and cracked into pale little moons.

By morning the stain had darkened to the colour of strong tea. You peeled the last flake away on the train home, and on the platform a pigeon watched the chain of small dark drops swing with every step you took, as if they were trying to keep up.
