You find the bicycle in the back of the barn on the morning of the wedding, its tyres gone soft and a wicker basket wired crookedly to the handlebars. Your grandmother swears it hasn't been ridden since the year the chapel roof leaked into the font. You wipe the saddle with your sleeve, pump the tyres with the old brass hand pump, and listen to the air hiss back into them like something waking up.

Nell wants to ride it up the lane from the chapel to the marquee, which is a daft plan in heels, and you tell her so. She says she'll change into flats, and you say the gravel will have her for breakfast. Still, you fill the basket with sweet peas and cornflowers from the vegetable patch, quietly leaving out the ones already drooping at the stem so it looks fuller than it is.

Halfway up the hill the chain jumps off the cog and you have to walk the bike the rest of the way, one hand on the bars and Nell's dress bunched in the other, while the guests stand at the gate pretending not to watch. Petals shake loose at every bump. By the time you reach the marquee the basket is empty and the front wheel is wobbling like it has opinions.

Nell kisses you on the cheek, leaves the bicycle against the gatepost with one sprig of sweet pea still tucked behind the saddle, and goes in to be married. You stay out in the lane a while, turning the pedal slowly with your finger and watching the spokes catch the last of the light, until the music starts up and someone calls your name.
