Black and grey fine line mandala tattoo shaped like a heart with dangling dot details, on the inside of an ankle against a pink patterned scarf.

Mandala heart tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot and ankle showing a small black and grey tattoo of a heart outlined with ornate mandala and lotus-like petals. Fine, fairly thin linework is used, with small dots and short dangling lines hanging from the base of the design. The tattoo sits on the ankle against a bright pink and red patterned fabric, which fills most of the frame.

The dye-master of Oriel Vale would not sell me the red unless I brought him the old pattern book, so I walked forty miles from the salt road with it strapped against my ribs. Nobody in the mountain kingdom of Sarrowen printed anything. Every design was pricked into card by hand, and the lotus heart was the oldest of them, a mandala folded into the shape of a love token that a man gave his betrothed to hang at the hem of her skirt.

Hallis Morr took the book and turned its pages slowly, the way you would turn bread. He stopped at the heart. "Your mother drew this," he said. "Thirty years ago she came to me wanting the petals to fall the way rain falls off a leaf." He mixed the madder and the iron until the vat turned the colour of a pomegranate split open, then showed me how to sew the dangling seed beads, one to each fine line, so the ornament would shiver with every step.

I asked how many dots there were. He laughed and said my mother had counted them every night for a month, and that was how she came to know the road home was exactly as long as the hem. I finished the last bead at dusk, with the lamp guttering, and folded the scarf into a basket with the salt for the coast. Friday's caravan would carry it south to a bride I would never meet. Before I tied the cord, I counted the dots once more, and the number came out right.
