Mandala band tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a white textured towel, with a black ink mandala design wrapped around one finger. The design is built from scalloped petal shapes, concentric arcs and small dots, drawn in fine, even linework with little shading. The coral nail polish and warm skin tones contrast with the dark ink, and the close crop keeps the tattoo as the central focus.

The pricking board had been in the Pennock family since before the railway came to Honiton, and Ruth knew every one of its brass pins by the dent it left in her thumb. She had been working the same rosette for nine days, a circle of scalloped petals that closed on itself like a flower seen from above, and each morning she pinned it fresh because the thread kept pulling the old pins loose.

Her nephew Dan came up the stairs with a letter he had found behind the dresser. It was addressed to their grandmother in a hand neither of them knew, and it asked for one piece of lace, no wider than a wedding ring, with the petals turned inward and a dot for every year the writer had been away at sea. Ruth counted the years against the postmark and got forty-one dots, which was a great many to fit around anything small.
She worked through the evening with the lamp pulled close. Each petal took the bobbins in a pattern her grandmother had taught her, cross and twist, cross and twist, and where the thread ran thin she left a tiny hole that looked, when she held it to the window, like a star. By midnight she had a band that would sit snug over a knuckle, with forty-one knots of black silk tied off along its edge, one for each year.
In the morning she posted it without a note. Dan asked what she had put in the envelope, and she said only that the petals went all the way round, which was how the old lacemakers finished a piece so nobody could tell where it had started.
