Dear Tomasz, the projector in the Wenlow Hall finally gave up on Tuesday, halfway through Saturn, so the Thursday children sat in the dark and listened to me instead. Mr Okonedo from the council says it can be mended for four hundred pounds, which is four hundred pounds more than we have in the box marked projector. I told the children that the rings are mostly ice, and one boy asked whether you could skate on them. I said probably not, but you could try, and that seemed to settle it for him.

Your grandfather's balsa rocket is still hanging from the ceiling above the stage, where he tied it with fishing line in 1971. One fin has gone soft and the nose is cracked, but it turns slowly when the heating comes on, as if it is still checking the weather. Nobody has had the heart to take it down. The girl who cleans on Fridays dusted it very carefully and then asked me whether a rocket ever gets lonely, which I thought was a sensible question for a girl of nine.

So I have moved the rocket to the windowsill in my front room, next to the little brass Saturn from the gift shop, and I have been looking at them over my tea. They are not very far apart, in the way that matters on a sill. You are the one who measured things properly, so when you come home at half term, bring your ruler. We will work out the distance between them to the nearest centimetre, and then you can tell me how many of those centimetres it would take to reach the real one.
