Patterned heart on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart sits on the back of a hand near the wrist, its outline and interior filled with a lace-like ornamental pattern of fine dark lines. The linework is thin and delicate, and the ink is a dark grey-black with no colour. The hand rests against a knitted sleeve, with pink nails and a small rhinestone accent in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pattern book had been shut in my grandmother's dresser since the year the Honiton workshop closed, and nobody had touched it since. I found it on a wet Tuesday, wedged behind a tin of pins and a jar of cold tea, and the page that fell open was a heart. Not a valentine heart. This one was made of holes, pricked into card so fine you could hold it to the window and watch the light come through in a hundred small diamonds.

Grandmother called it the heart with no thread in it. She said lace was never really the thread, it was the space the thread refused to fill. I sat at her pillow that evening with forty bobbins clicking in my lap and tried to make it, and for three nights I produced a tangle that looked like a bramble caught on a gate. Each time a pin slipped, the whole heart loosened and I had to start again from the bottom edge, lifting the cloth off the pillow like a sheet off a sleeping dog.

On the fourth night the thread ran true. The crossings fell the way her hands used to fall, quick and certain, and I understood that the pattern had never been a picture of a heart at all. It was a record of where she had stopped each evening for forty years, the pins left standing in the same small places.

I left the last pin in the final loop, the way she always did, so the pillow would hold its shape until morning.
