Saturn and rocket finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together against a dark surface, showing two small tattoos on the fingers. One is an outline of a ringed planet resembling Saturn, and the other is a simple outline of a rocket on the adjacent finger. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink with no shading, and the coral nail polish is the only other strong colour in the frame.

The tide table was still damp when Bea pressed it flat on the kitchen oilcloth and announced that the planet had to go on the middle finger, because Saturn had a ring around it and a ring, she said, was a promise. Ada argued for the rocket to go on the one beside it, since it was the only thing on the page that was going somewhere. They settled it the way they settled everything that summer, by walking down to the sea wall in the drizzle with a biro and a borrowed tin of Indian ink, and drawing each shape on the other's skin until the ink smudged and they had to start again.

Ada left Hartlepool the autumn she turned eighteen, on the early train, with a rucksack and a telescope they had bought off a charity shop for four pounds and never once got to focus properly. Bea stayed to mind the shop their grandfather had left them, a dim room of fishing floats and cracked barometers. Letters came in fits. One arrived with a launch-site stamp from somewhere on the far side of the Channel, and inside it was nothing but a sketch in the margin of a single ringed planet, drawn in the same thin line Bea had once inked on her sister's knuckle.
That night Bea propped the tide table against the window and watched the harbour lights blink out one by one. She traced the rocket's path with her fingertip across the glass, from the bottom of the pane up towards the faint smudge of the pier light, and then she set the planet beside it, close enough that the two lines nearly touched.
