Mandala cat tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo
A seated cat with a patterned face and body fills the centre of the image, its body covered in black linework and ornamental mandala motifs. A large circular mandala in red, blue and purple sits behind the cat, framing its head and shoulders. Solid black outlines, fine detail and soft shading give the piece a layered, decorative look against the skin of the upper back.

Every morning before the glasshouses were unlocked, the cat was already waiting on the stone plinth of the sundial, sitting square to the dial as if someone had asked her to keep the time. Nobody at Ashcombe Walled Garden owned her. Hal Brannock had tried for a month to put a name to her, but she answered to nothing except the sound of the kettle in the potting shed.

The dial was old, its brass face cut in rings of petals and lozenges that Hal polished every spring with vinegar and patience. Each ring sat inside the next, and when the sun was high the whole thing threw a wheel of light across the gravel. The cat sat in the middle of it, her coat banded in black and grey with that odd rusty bloom along her shoulders, and she never once looked at the roses. She watched the gnomon's shadow creep toward the noon mark like a schoolchild waiting for the bell.
The estate was to be sold in October. Hal had a letter about it folded in his apron pocket, with the words development and removal of listed fixtures printed across the top. He told the cat this on a Thursday. She yawned, slow and wide, then stood, walked to the edge of the brass, and sat down again so that her shadow lay exactly across the figure twelve.
The surveyor came in November and measured everything except the dial, which he called a lovely thing that could not be moved without breaking. Hal went out at noon and found the cat in her place, the shadow still resting on the mark. He never did learn whose she was. Every day after that he sat on the bench beside the sundial and let the cat tell him when it was time to eat his sandwich, and the garden stayed exactly where it was.
