Wolf and ram head on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A snarling wolf's head with bared fangs sits above a ram's head with curled horns, forming a layered portrait. The shading is black and grey, with fine hair texture and strong contrast in the wolf's eyes and muzzle. The tattoo fills the thigh, with a studio chair and red fixtures in the background.

The snow had lain on the tops since Michaelmas, and when the ewes came down to the fold at Scarth Gill with their heads low, old Tobias Reeve knew the grey dog was about again. He took his lamp and his ram, a great horned tup called Bramble, and walked out past the wall where the bracken was flattened.

Nobody in the village agreed on what the wolf was. Mrs Kell said it was a fell spirit that had lost its way from Norway. The schoolmaster said it was a dog gone wild from the Hartley farm and the shepherds were fools. Tobias only knew that it came every winter on the night the wind turned, and that it never took a lamb without first standing in the road and looking up at the chapel window.
That year Bramble would not stay behind the hurdle. He broke it with his shoulder, walked out onto the road, and stood square beside the wolf as though they had agreed on something long before. Tobias ran after them with the lamp. In its light the two looked like one beast with two heads, the wolf's ruff bristling against the ram's curled horns, and both pairs of eyes turned on him at once.
Nobody saw what passed between them. By morning the tracks went up the gill and did not come back, and Bramble was grazing at the fold gate with snow on his back, bleating for his breakfast. Tobias never told the schoolmaster the rest. The ewes went up the gill that spring without a shepherd, and a single grey hair stayed caught in Bramble's left horn, where it shone in the lamplight each evening as the two of them came back down to the fold together.
