Winged black cat with mandala on thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A black cat with outstretched wings sits centrally, with an om symbol above its head and a small red mark on its forehead. Behind it sit a red lotus-style mandala and a dotwork grey halo, with stippled grey feathers extending the wings outward. The solid black cat contrasts with the red and grey shading, and the design fills the thigh in a symmetrical composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had counted the beds twice before the coach driver came stamping in with snow to his knees, and twice she came up one short. Nell watched her from the top of the settle, unbothered, her black coat so glossy that the lamplight slid off it. The wind had been at the shutters since noon. Outside the Drover's Rest the road over the tops had vanished under four feet of white, and the only sounds were the clock and the hiss of the kettle.

The stranger was a surveyor named Pell, who had come up from Leeds with a brass theodolite in a case he would not let anyone carry. He took the settle without argument, since it was nearest the fire, and Ada put a cup of brandy into his cold hands. Nell dropped to the flags, crossed the room without a sound, and sat in the window where the moon hung above the drifts. A grey ring stood round it, fine as pencil dots, and the frost on the glass caught it so that the whole sky seemed to hum. Pell looked up from his drink and said, to nobody in particular, that he had never seen a cat sit so straight.

Ada woke near three to find the settle empty and the back door open a crack. The cold came in across the flags in a clean line. She took the lantern into the yard and followed the prints, small and neat, to the top of the wall where Nell sat with her tail curled round her paws and the moon directly over her head. Something lifted behind her shoulders as Ada watched, long and dark, then folded itself down again so quietly that Ada could not have sworn to it.

At first light the road showed brown through the drifts, and Pell paid his shilling and went down the hill without looking back. Nell was on the gatepost, washing one ear as though she had never left the hearth.
