Mandala design across the back of a hand

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest on a wooden table, showing a symmetrical mandala with a central rosette, scalloped petals and a teardrop motif at the wrist. Fine dotted lines link the design across the back of the hand and down onto the fingers, where small bands and dots continue the pattern. The work is a single dark brown to black tone with no colour, and it is framed by a knitted sweater sleeve at the top of the frame.

The paste is cold on your palm, green-brown and smelling of cut grass, and your aunt tells you not to speak until it has dried. She has been crushing the leaves since morning in a brass bowl, sieving them through a square of muslin and stirring in lemon juice and a spoon of sugar until the mixture holds its shape. Outside, the lawsonia bush by the well wall drops its last leaves onto the warm bricks.

She works quickly, leaning over your wrist with a cone of paste no thicker than a pencil. First comes the rosette at the centre, a ring of tiny petals closed with a dot, then the scalloped rim, each scallop finished with a curl like a fern unrolling. A teardrop hangs at the wrist. She runs a fine row of dots from the rim toward your fingers, and at the knuckles she draws a band around each finger, thin as thread, pausing between them to blow gently on the paste.

The afternoon goes slowly. A crow walks along the wall and considers the bowl. Your cousin Layla brings out glasses of sweet tea and asks whether it hurts, and you shake your head, because the cold is kind and the dots are starting to look like a path someone has walked before you. Somewhere in the house a radio plays songs from a wedding you have not been invited to yet.

By evening the paste has cracked into grey flakes. Your aunt tells you to scrape it off with a blunt knife, not to wash it, and to keep the oil away until morning. When you hold your hand up under the lamp, the lines are not orange as you expected but the deep brown of wet earth beneath the bush. She taps the centre rosette. Give it three days, she says, and it will darken to the colour of the tea. You follow the dotted line from wrist to fingertip, and it is marked clearly enough to find your way back out of the garden.
