Mandala and chevron hand tattoo

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A palm-side view of a hand with dark ink patterns covering the palm, fingers and wrist. A large mandala-like motif with scalloped arches sits across the palm, with chevron marks on the fingers and a row of chevrons and a banded design above the wrist. The ink is dark brown or black, set against plain pale skin and a light background, and the design is arranged symmetrically across the hand.

You have worked the lost property hatch at Harrowgate Junction for eleven years, long enough to know that people leave behind the things they cannot carry: umbrellas, a tin of shortbread, once a whole wedding cake in a box. Tonight the last train has gone and the shutter is half down when a porter sets a small canvas bag on the counter and says it has been sitting by the buffer stop since the evening rush.

Inside, wrapped in a tea towel, is a brass compass with a cracked glass and a sketchbook. You open it. Every page holds the same pattern drawn again and again: a round mandala with scalloped arches, rows of chevrons all pointing one way like the arrows painted on the sleepers, a small sun at the rim. On the last page someone has written a timetable in pencil, with stops that appear on no map you own: Ember Cross, Lesser Tide, Old Sundial Halt.

You spend the night checking the timetable against the railway's own book, and nothing matches. At half past four the platform clock stops at a time that is not really a time, and a train slides into Line Four with its doors open and no driver in the cab. The compass needle swings until it points at the painted sun, and the chevrons on the sketchbook page seem to shift like birds settling on a wire.

You leave the hatch open and the kettle still warm. By the time the shutter finishes its fall, you are standing on the step of a carriage with the timetable folded in your pocket, and the doors are closing behind you on a platform that nobody else in Harrowgate will ever see.
