Henna designs on two hands

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest on pale pink fabric beside a white feather, with the fingers and backs of the hands decorated in dark henna. The design uses fine dotted and lined patterns, scalloped lace-like panels, paisley shapes and small floral motifs, with a ring worn on one finger. The ink is a dark brown-black and the composition is shot from above with soft, even light.

Dear Nasreen,

The henna took four days to darken, which Auntie Farida said was the only honest thing about it. You will laugh, but I sat at the kitchen table on Southfield Road with the paste drying in its cone, copying the paisley you sent from Multan onto the back of an envelope, and the dots kept sliding out of their lines. Mum says the lace panels must be drawn like a row of arches, each one leaning on the next, or the whole thing sags.

The officer at Heathrow did not look at the ink at all. He looked at the passport, then at the gold bangles clinking against the counter, then back at the passport. He asked what the designs were for. I said they were for Sunday, and that was true enough. Farida had insisted a bride's henna must leave a small empty space for something, so I had left a ring-shaped gap between the dots and the flowers, and I still do not know if she was joking.

On the flight I kept my hands flat on the tray table and traced the little floral motifs with one fingertip, from the centre outward so nothing smudged. By the time we reached Lahore the brown had gone almost black at the edges, and Farida's sons were waiting at arrivals holding a card with nothing on it but my name.

Tell Mum the lace came out straight in the end. I will send a photograph once the stain settles.
