Mandala design in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing on a spiral sketchbook page shows three circular mandala motifs arranged as a Mickey Mouse head, with a larger central circle and two smaller ears. Each mandala has radiating leaf-like petals, concentric bands of hatching, dots and scalloped outer rings. The work is in black ink on cream paper with no colour, and the design fills most of the frame.

Nell had been drawing the same three rounds since the lock at Hatherby went quiet, sat on the back step of the Marigold with a biro and a sketchbook she'd bought in Banbury for the price of two loaves. Nell's were never quite as even, but the lines held if she pressed the pen down slow.

Her father came along the towpath with a coil of rope over one shoulder and stopped at the stern rail. He looked at the page for a long time. 'Three of them,' he said. 'The big one's doing the work. The little two are just keeping it company.' 'They're ears,' she said. 'Ears on what?' 'On the face I haven't finished.' He grunted, which from him was praise, and went off to check the paddle gear, the iron wet and orange under his thumb.
By afternoon the gates had groaned open and the water had dropped the Marigold a full man's height. From the bottom of the lock the sky looked like a sheet of tin. Nell tore out the page, folded it twice and wedged it under a stone on the lock-keeper's wall where the wind would find it before anyone else did. Someone coming up through the gates would see three circles pressed flat against the stone and wonder which way they were meant to turn.
