Henna lotus and mandala on the back of a hand

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm down on a textured paper surface, with black henna-style designs covering the back of the hand and the upper parts of three fingers. A central lotus flower sits above a wrist-level mandala with dotted and lace-like linework, and each finger carries a small geometric motif with dotted accents. The design is rendered in solid dark ink on light skin, with no shading, and the composition is centred on the hand against a neutral background with a spiral notebook edge at the left.

The paste has to rest until morning, so you sit at your nan's kitchen table with the squeezed cone still warm in your fist and the sharp smell of lemon and sugar hanging over the kettle. Tomorrow is Nasreen's wedding. Tonight is the only quiet hour the house will get all week, and somewhere down the hall a cousin is arguing with a caterer about cardamom.

Nasreen wants a lotus in the middle, the same one her mother used to doodle on the back of every school jotter, and a mandala at the wrist where the bangles will sit. She wants a dot trail running down each finger like beads on a string. You have practised on oranges and on the margins of your own notebook for a month, but a real palm is a different surface, and you have never had to hold your breath through the last petal.

Nan shuffles in at eleven in her dressing gown and stands behind your chair, reading the drawing you sketched on paper without saying a word. Then she takes the cone from you, presses a single dot in the centre of the lotus, and hands it back. Count them, she says, one for every guest who will bring you trouble and one for every guest who will bring you rice. You count until the numbers blur into the lamplight, and the paste goes on steady.

A week later Nasreen sends a photo from the honeymoon. The fingertips have already gone bare, and the dots have faded to rust, but the lotus is still there at the base of her hand, pale as a watermark, holding on where the skin bends whenever she reaches for something.
