Mandala flower design on skin
Geometric · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala flower with a central rosette, layered scalloped petals and dotted outlines, drawn in dark brown-black ink. The linework is even and the fine dots and loops give a patterned, radial effect. The design fills the centre of the frame against a soft, slightly warm skin tone with no other objects visible.

The queue at the stall on Belgrave Road had thinned by eleven, and the bulbs over my head were buzzing the way they always did when it rained. Nan's rule was to start in the middle. Rosette first, then the ring of small dots, then the petals, each one a looped cup set on a saucer. Her hands never shook, even at the end, when the cone was nearly empty and she was squeezing the last of the paste through its pinhole.

A lad ducked under the awning with his phone lit up, showing me a picture of something he'd seen in a shop window in Manchester. No centre, he said, just the outer petals, open at the back as if the middle had blown away. I told him a flower without a middle is only a fence. He laughed, but he sat down anyway, and I drew the rosette first, a tight knot of dots that made the whole thing seem to be looking back at you.
He paid in coins and didn't wait for it to dry. I watched him walk off towards the bus stop with the paste already going orange on the edges, and I thought about how it darkens over three days, from orange to brown to nearly black, so that anything drawn in a hurry comes back a little more certain than you meant it to be.
After he'd gone I took a clean cone and drew one on my own palm, starting in the middle and counting the dots out loud in Gujarati the way she did, until the rain stopped and the shutter came down.
