Symmetrical rose mandala on the chest

Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo

A symmetrical, rose-like flower sits at the centre of the image, built from layered red, pink, cream and purple petals around a black and cream centre. Teal leaves with orange-red veins spread outwards from behind the bloom. Bold black outlines define each shape, and the colour is solid with little visible shading, set against unmarked skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose behind St Ebba's would not open until the tide had covered the bottom step, and that spring the sea came over it twice before Ada Penrose thought to ask why. Her grandmother had kept the bush in a tin bath under the chapel wall, feeding it fish heads and rain. It had always flowered the same way: red and cream in rings, a black eye at its heart, and leaves the green of a kingfisher's back with orange veins running through them like the stripes on a lifeboat jersey.

She took the question to Jonah Vane, who mended nets on the quay and had never once been known to hurry. He sat with the twine across his knees and said the cutting had come ashore from a Dutch hulk the year the lifeboat was lost, and that a rose like that did not grow for nothing. "It wants paying," he said. "Something taken off the water for every bloom it gives you." Ada thought of the three crab boats that had not come home since Candlemas and said nothing for a long while.

That night she cut the largest flower with her grandmother's shears and carried it down to the step. The tide was making, black and quiet. She counted the petals as they fell into the foam, one for each name on the board inside the chapel door, and when she reached the last one she found she could not let it go. She pressed it flat inside her grandmother's Bible, where the pages were thickest.

In the morning the bush had put out a fresh bloom, and the step stayed dry for the first time since Candlemas. Ada left the flower where it stood. She went down to the quay instead, and asked Jonah whether he had a spare net, because somebody had to go out and bring the boats home.
