Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala sits on the inner forearm, built from a central ring of dots and layered radiating petals with fine scalloped edges. The design uses fine black linework and stippled dots, with areas of solid ink giving some contrast against the lighter skin. The tattoo is centred on the arm, with a grey fabric sleeve at the left edge and a dark background behind.

The carousel at Hollin Fair had a flower painted on its hub, eleven petals stacked in rings with a circle of dots around the middle, and every autumn Ada Pell scrubbed it clean before the lorries came. Her father said the paint was older than the fair itself. Her mother said that was nonsense, but she never once let anyone else touch the hub.

The year the rain didn't stop, a stranger with a folding easel asked to paint over it. He said he could make it bloom in the dark. Ada told him the dots were not decoration. Each one was a place where somebody had stood and not gone on, and if he filled them the wheel would forget where it had been left. He laughed and offered her a shilling. She took the shilling and sent him off to the big top.
That night the wheel turned on its own, slowly, the way a clock hand moves when no one is watching. Ada climbed up with a rag and a jar of turpentine and found the dots still sharp under the lamp, every one of them untouched. The painter was gone by morning, leaving his easel on the step. The flower was still there, petals clean, and the pale circle at its centre was still empty, kept open for whoever came back to fill it.
