Mandala tattoo on the ribs

Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A circular mandala sits on the side of the torso, with a radiating outer ring of pointed petals and a central star-like motif. Fine dotted lines and solid black linework build the pattern, with the dots forming a ring between the layers. The design is shown in black ink only, centred on the skin with fabric draped at the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Cook Hanne Voss had been at the galley table since the lamp was lit, and the mate had already sent twice to ask why the bread wasn't in. She did not look up. With the blunt end of a nail she was pricking dots into the tin lid of the flour bin, one at a time, in a ring as wide as a saucer. The men called it her counting. Nobody aboard the Constance Mary had ever asked what she was counting.

The boy Teodor, new from Esbjerg, sat on the coal locker and watched. When the swell rose and the pots slid, she set the nail down and told him the tale her grandmother had told her: that a ship with a star inside her galley would never run out of bread in a storm, so long as the cook kept the star turning. A star was only a pattern, she said, and a pattern was only a way of making a hard hour go round in circles until it ended.

Teodor did not believe her. When she slept, he took the nail and made his own ring on the flour lid, petals on the outside and a hub of small stars at the centre. In the morning the galley smelled of scorched oats. The mate shouted, the cook came in grim and furious, and then she stopped in the doorway with one hand on the frame.

She ran her thumb along his dots without a word. Then she took down the sugar tin and began to fill in the petals he had missed. The swell eased by noon, and nobody aboard ever quite agreed whether it was the weather or the lid.
