Mandala lotus with dots on the chest
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical lotus flower filled with fine ornamental patterns, including dots, scallops and concentric curves, sits centrally on the skin. Crisp black linework is combined with dense stippling and shaded areas to give depth to the petals. The design is shown in black ink and grey tones on a pale background, with a vertical line of dots extending above and below the flower.

Nell had the glass laid across the bench like a map of a drowned garden, and she counted the petals twice before she let herself touch anything. Eight on each side, and the centre one split by a sliver of lead no wider than thread. Her uncle had always said the old maker never repeated a pattern within a single window, and she had believed him until she found the mirror. The left half was perfect, the right half was perfect, and between them ran a column of tiny pinpricks where the lead met, as if someone had marked the line with a nail.

The work went slowly through the morning. She cleaned the scalloped edges with a soft brush, lifted the fragments one by one, and laid them in order on blue baize. The dots were the hardest. Each was a bead of old solder, grey and flattened, sitting where a rivet should have been. Halvard came in from the harbour smelling of diesel and tea and stood behind her without speaking, which was how he asked his questions.
"Those aren't repairs," she said at last. "Somebody made them on purpose. Eleven above the flower, eleven below, and the middle one's a different size." He leaned closer, squinted, and gave a low laugh. "Seventy years of people fixing this window and nobody thought to count."
She found the last piece under the bench that afternoon: a drop of amber glass, the only warm colour in the whole lotus. She set it into the gap at the centre, and when the sun came off the sea it threw a small gold stain across the baize. Halvard said nothing. Nell pressed the final bead flat with her thumb, and the dots kept their count.
