Black mandala tattoo on the back of a hand, beside faded LOVE script on the wrist and fingers, shown in four photographs.

Mandala on the back of a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A collage of four photographs shows a hand with a black ink mandala on the back, built from a central spiral, layered petal shapes and dotted edging. The linework is solid and mostly uniform, with the fill created by dense hatching and dots rather than shading. The mandala is set against a faded teal script reading LOVE that runs across the wrist and fingers, and the background is dark.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now sit close, for this is the tale of Agnes Pilling and the snail that would not leave her wall. You will think a snail a dull thing to build a story on, but mind, this one had a shell wound round like a clock spring, and it sat on the cold brick of the kitchen garden every morning of that hard winter as if it had paid the rent.

Agnes kept a lock of her husband's hair in a biscuit tin, and a dozen cuttings of a rose nobody else in the valley could keep alive. She was no woman for sentiment. When the frost came she pulled her shawl tighter and went on with the leeks. But the snail was thorough. It drew round the rose's rim each night in a silver line, and each morning the petals had fallen in a ring, laid out pale and neat like the lace on the altar cloth at chapel.

Her grandson Tobias came up from the town that February with a van full of nonsense and a bad temper. He wanted to sell the cottage. He stood at the wall with his hands in his pockets and said, Gran, that thing is eating your garden. She told him to hold his tongue and look. Round the rose the fallen petals lay in circles, a spiral at the centre, seed dots scattered at the edge as if someone had counted every one.

He stayed a week, mended the gate, and on the last morning he found the snail upturned on the path, its shell cracked. Agnes knelt on the wet flags and laid it under the rose. Spring, she said, is only the garden remembering its rules. Tobias did not sell the cottage. He still says that snail was the cleverest thing that ever lived in that wall.
