Lace mandala with dangling feather
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large black lace-style mandala sits at the top, with a central circle surrounded by layered petal-like shapes and dotted ornamental detail. Below it, thin chains of dots and lines hang down toward a feather with patterned fan detail at the base. The ink is solid black with no shading beyond fine linework, and the three panels show the same design from slightly different angles.

Dear Wren,

The loom in the east hall finally took the new bobbin pattern, the one with the hollow centre you drew for me on the back of a ration slip. Madam Osei ran her thumb over the first metre and said nothing for so long I thought I had ruined the whole bolt. Then she said the petals were honest, which from her is a medal. I have pinned the test piece above my cot so the draft from the vent can't reach it.
The sea beyond the dome has gone the colour of pewter again, and the gulls are back on the ledge where the old fishermen used to dry their nets. Yesterday I walked the chain-line down to the lower terraces the way you showed me, counting the dots between each link. There were forty-one dots before the feather, and I got it wrong twice before I stopped trying to be neat about it. You always said the chains should look like they were dropped, not hung.
I went down to the old cutter's shed with the spare feather you left in the drawer. The vane had split along one edge, so I glued it with the resin we use for sealing the bolt ends. It holds. Tonight I will try to thread the fan of the feather into the lace the way you did, one filament at a time, so that the pattern reads as light coming through rather than ink lying on top.
If the supply barge comes in on the fourth, send word with it. I would like you to see the piece before Madam Osei sends it up the coast. I will keep the lamp lit at the window, the one you can see from the breakwater.
Yours in thread, Isla
