Lace-style ornament across hand and wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the back of a hand and wrist, with a black ink tattoo of lace-like floral scrolls, rosettes and dangling beaded chains. The linework is fine and solid, with small dot accents along the chains and a band of ornament wrapping the wrist and fingers. The image is in colour, with the dark ink contrasting against the skin and a patterned cream textile in the background.

The mules balked at the third switchback, and you were the one who had to walk back down and talk them up. Your aunt's bundles of bobbin lace were packed in oilcloth on the lead animal and sewn shut, because the pass had already taken two carts that autumn and she would not lose the work to the river.

Above the cairn the wind came sideways off the snowfield and set the glass beads on the lace collars knocking against each other, a sound like someone shaking a box of dice. You had thought it a bad omen. Your aunt said it was the only music the mountain knew, and it would have to do.
At the top the mist opened for a moment and you saw the valley far below, a green thread with a village at every knot. The lace in your head unfolded the same way: scroll after scroll of leaves, then a rosette where the pattern paused to breathe, then fine chains hanging from it like rain that had not yet decided to fall. You had drawn them on the back of a ledger every night by lamplight.
Going down, your aunt cut one short length from the bundle and pinned it to your sleeve against the cold. At the inn at Corva the innkeeper's wife counted the pieces twice and found them all. Then she looked at your sleeve and asked who had made the pattern. You told her the mountain had, and she laughed and bought the chains for her daughter's wedding veil.
