Mandala ornament tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a forearm close to the wrist, with a large symmetrical mandala-style ornament tattooed on the skin. The design has layered petal and scallop shapes, dotted borders and a central diamond, filled with solid black lines and soft grey shading. The background is a pale brick wall and a light fabric sleeve, and the skin shows some glare from the light.

Dessa had been scrubbing the same copper stockpot since Gravesend, and the ring of last night's stew still sat in its base like a dark starburst that wire wool could not shift. Beyond the porthole the North Sea lay flat and grey as a cold griddle. Chief Ruan leaned in the hatch with his clipboard and said the owners wanted the galley log squared before the Aberdeen inspection, and did she know where the spare sieve had gone.

She did not, but she knew where the tracing was. It lived in a biscuit tin under the bread bin, tucked in beside the good cake fork: a lace pattern her mother had drawn for her years ago on squared paper, petals nested inside petals, scalloped edges, and a row of pinpricks along the rim as if someone had counted every one. Her mother had called it a rosette. Dessa had always thought of it as a window with the light still in it.

She laid the tracing over the pot's base and held both up to the lamp. The stain fell almost exactly under the central diamond, and when the ship rolled and the lamp swung, the petals seemed to open and close around it, patient as a lock being turned. She stopped scrubbing. It was only a pot, she told herself, and the scum would still be there after breakfast, but the pattern had found its centre and she was not ready to rub it out yet.

When Ruan came back at four, the sieve was hanging on its hook where it had always been, and the copper gleamed everywhere except one dark diamond at its heart. He looked at it, frowned, and wrote something in his log. Dessa kept her face straight and let him wonder.
