Mandala-patterned bird in flight on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bird in flight, shown in profile with outstretched wings, is tattooed on the upper back. The outline is a fine, single-needle line, and the wings and body are filled with repeating mandala-style ornaments. The ink is black and the image is a black and white photograph, with the bird set against smooth skin and the top edge of a light bikini strap visible.

You learn the rigging before you learn the names of the towns, and by October the ropes are the only thing in the Halloran & Sons Travelling Circus that still gets tightened every morning. The big top has a split along the north seam now, mended with duct tape the colour of weak tea, and the ringmaster has stopped pretending the crowds in Doncaster were anything but a dozen pensioners and a dog.

Your job is the wire. Every evening you climb the ladder to check the swing for the last act, Teodora's slow flight, a woman who wears a painted swallow on a scarf her mother sewed in a city nobody here can pronounce. Teodora has not flown in a month. Her knee is held together with a bandage and her opinions, and she tells you the wire is fine when it is not.

So you do it yourself. You take the old tin of stencil powder from the wardrobe trunk, the one with the circles and petals, and you dab the ornaments into the wings of the wooden bird that hangs above the ring, the one the children used to touch for luck. Concentric rings, lace of lotus, a small sun in the belly. Nobody will notice. That is the point.

On the last night the seats hold four people. Teodora stands in the sawdust, looks up at the bird, and laughs once, sharp as a snapped line. "Somebody finally remembered the feathers," she says, and climbs the ladder anyway.
