Before the bakers woke, the elephant was already at work. Her name was Sunita, and she had carried flour up from the river barges for longer than anyone in Coppice Lane could remember. She lifted each sack with her trunk, curled high the way she held it when she was pleased with herself, and set it beside the kneading trough without spilling a grain.

Her skin was marked with rings and petals that the baker's granddaughter had painted on her one winter, using a brush dipped in cold tea and flour paste. For every loaf the bakery sold that month, she drew another circle, so that by spring the marks ran from Sunita's ears to the tuft of her tail. The children of the lane said the elephant was the only one in town who could read the pattern of a good morning.

That year the river flooded in the dark before the spring fair. The mill sank with its wheel still turning, and the barges were lost, and by four o'clock there was no flour in the lane at all. Sunita went down to the water alone. She waded out until only her head and raised trunk showed above the brown current, and she brought back sacks one at a time, dry on her back, until the troughs were full and the ovens were hot.

When the first bell rang, the bakers came out to find the loaves already rising. Nobody made a speech about it. The granddaughter only climbed the stepladder that spring and painted one more circle on Sunita's hip, and this time she left the middle empty, so the next person to look would know there was still room in her.
