Elephant head pencil drawing
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing elephant head with large ears, a curved trunk hanging down the centre and two tusks curving outward. The linework is fine and sketchy, with shading on the wrinkled skin, ears and tusks. The drawing is in black and grey pencil on a plain white background with the subject centred.

The drought had split the mud at Halden Pan into plates the size of cartwheels, and Oduya had stopped counting the days since the last rain. Her grandson Jabari sat on the tailgate of the water cart, kicking his heels against the wood, watching the old bull come down from the scrub. Everyone called him Greyear, though nobody could say who had given him the name. One tusk had snapped years back and grown in a hook, and the other curved out wide and pale, like a bow held open.

Greyear did not drink from the pan. He went instead to the dry ditch where the spring used to run, and he stood there with his ears spread, listening to the ground the way a man listens at a door. Jabari asked what he could hear. Oduya said he was listening for the water still moving under the stones, because the old ones always knew where it had gone.
On the third morning the bull pressed his broad forehead against the bank, and the earth gave way beneath him with a long, slow sigh. Water seeped up, grey and cold, filling the hollow his feet had made. The herd came down to it one by one, calves first, and the cart's tank was full before noon.
Oduya climbed down to thank him, but Greyear had already turned toward the trees. Jabari saw him lift his trunk once, high above the thorn, and let it fall. Then the shade took him. The boy filled the last jug from the hollow, still cool from the earth, and did not tell anyone where the spring had been.
