Ornamental mandala elephant design
Black and grey · Flash
A side-profile elephant drawn in black linework and grey tones, with its body, legs and trunk filled with dense mandala, floral and paisley-like motifs. The ornament is most detailed across the head and shoulders, with simpler patterned panels on the legs and flank. The plain white background isolates the figure, and the image reads as a design sheet rather than a photograph of skin.

Dear Mam, the wireless in the back room has gone quiet again, so I am writing this at the kitchen table with the lamp turned up, the way you taught me to draw when I was small and the paper was all we had. Mr Okafor from the chandlery came by this morning wanting his wedding cloth done before Saturday. I told him I would have it finished by Thursday, and I meant it, even though the border still has three rows of paisley to fill and my hands have been stiff since the frost.

I have started carrying the old pattern book everywhere. The elephant design is the one I keep returning to, the one you drew on the back of the tin lid when the rest of the street was out at the herring boats. You said an elephant never forgets a hedge it has walked past, so you filled every inch of him with the things you remembered: marigolds from the garden, the twist of the ferry rope, the curl of smoke over Hartley's yard. I thought it was a child's fancy then. Now I sit with my needle and find I am doing the same, stitching whatever I have seen into the corners of the cloth.
So I have put a small boat in the hind leg, with a sail no bigger than my thumbnail, and a tiny lamp in the eye so the fishermen's wives will know someone is still awake. Mr Okafor will not see them. Nobody will unless they look for a long time. That is rather the point of a thing like this, I think. Tell Dad the lamp is for him, and that I have not forgotten the tin lid, and that I am still stitching.
Your loving daughter, Ada
