Mandala sleeve on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large circular mandala with a central flower motif sits on the forearm, surrounded by layered petals, scrolls and geometric lattice patterns that extend up the arm. The work combines fine linework with stippled dotwork shading to create texture and depth. The image is in black and grey against a dark leather background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stationmaster at Ashby Road kept a brass clock that ran four minutes slow, and every morning he set his watch by it anyway, because his mother had. The line north was quiet then, and the only thing that came through without stopping was the milk train, which carried a crate of cut flowers from the glasshouses at Holm. Nobody knew who packed the crate, only that the flowers arrived each Tuesday with their petals folded inward, like the closed hands of a sleeping child.

One February a girl came off the milk train with no ticket and a roll of paper under her arm. She asked the porter where the wheel in the yard was, and he told her there was no wheel, only the turntable for the engines. She said that was the wrong answer, and walked out to the turntable anyway, unrolled her paper on the cinders and began to draw in chalk. Rings first, then petals, then lattice lines that ran out past the rails toward the signal box. By dusk the whole yard was a flower the size of a parish.

The stationmaster came out with his lantern to shout at her and stopped at the edge of the chalk. The engines, it turned out, would not cross the lines she had drawn. They waited in the shed while the drivers stood on the platform with their caps in their hands, and the milk train sat on the far side of the petals all night with its lamps lit.

In the morning the girl was gone, and the chalk had dulled to grey under the frost. The clock at Ashby Road still ran four minutes slow. But the stationmaster noticed he had stopped setting his watch by it, and he never did start again.
